4-Legged Heroes: The K-9 Rescue Squad
Dogs’ keen sense of smell, their unfaltering loyalty, and their remarkable ability at direction-finding are aspects highly valued during search and rescue missions throughout the United States, especially in remote wilderness locations of the western states. We met with five such remarkable dogs and their intrepid handlers.
Learn what trained, experienced law enforcement officers already know: You can use verbal commands against attackers and in conjunction with partners. First responders explain how they use words to de-escalate a situation or inform a partner of intentions, as well as let an attacker know that they mean business.
“I have no desire to go live an isolated existence, waiting for the world to end or living in fear of some major disaster,” Hawke says. “Both can happen and are realistic possibilities. However, my choice is to stay in the world and be part of it, because I spent a lot of time out of it already.”
First responders work hard during disasters, and there’s often not enough of them. Under normal conditions, the average ratio of responder to citizen is approximately 1,000 residents to every one first responder.
